World number 11 Cam Norrie beat John Isner in three tight sets on Wednesday to maintain a solid run at the Madrid Open. The 26-year-old won his third ATP title earlier this season at the Delray Beach Open but his crowning achievement remains a stunning run to a first Masters title at Indian Wells last October. Norrie came into the year-end ATP Finals as a replacement for Stefanos Tsitsipas late last year.

World number nine Carlos Alcaraz turns 19 years old on Thursday and he won his last match as an 18-year-old with an entertaining straight-sets victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili. Alcaraz will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of eighth no matter the outcome of this match but a further win will see him usurp Matteo Berrettini into world number seven. Alcaraz won his first Masters title at the Miami Open last month before claiming his second ATP 500 title of the year on clay at the Barcelona Open.

Carlos Alcaraz faced his idol Rafael Nadal for the first time on this very day, his 18th birthday, last season as a rising star ranked at world number 120. One year on, the now 19-year-old has won three ATP titles on clay from the Umag Open last season and this year in Rio and Barcelona as well as a first Masters title at the Miami Open last month and a win here will take him to world number seven in the live rankings. Alcaraz has beaten Cam Norrie in straight sets in both of their previous meetings, including in March in the quarter-finals of Indian Wells to end the Brit’s defence of his first Masters title.
