THE LOWDOWN

World number 49 Brandon Nakashima beat Jack Draper in four high-quality sets on Friday to reach the finale of the Next Gen ATP Finals for the first time. The 21-year-old lost to eventual runner-up Sebastian Korda in the semi-finals last season but he clearly come on leaps and bounds in 2022, winning 30 matches on tour and a maiden ATP title at the San Diego Open.

World number 74 Jiri Lehecka provided one of the shocks of the tournament on Friday with a four-set victory over 3-0 up Dominic Stricker. The Czech has flown well under the radar this week in Milan with two wins over the significantly lower-ranked Italians in the draw but he has beaten the likes of Grigor Dimitrov, Denis Shapovalov and Lorenzo Musetti indoors this season.

THE PREDICTION

21-year-old Brandon Nakashima has looked a player beyond his age this season and he deserves this second bite at the Next Gen ATP Finals trophy. The American was one of two players with a title to their name coming into Milan and with the second-most tour wins behind Lorenzo Musetti, with his career-best run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon ended in thrilling five sets by eventual runner-up Nick Kyrgios. Jiri Lehecka has enjoyed some excellent results this year, almost reaching the Rotterdam Open in a three-set exit to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals there back in February. A win over Dominic Stricker makes him look a more dangerous prospect than their first encounter earlier this week, where Nakashima won in straight sets, but the American has looked focused and solid all campaign. Back Nakashima to win outright.
