World number three Rafael Nadal will play his first match on tour since pulling out of Wimbledon at the semi-finals stage, following a five-set epic with Taylor Fritz, handing Nick Kyrgios a walkover to the final. The 36-year-old broke the Men’s Singles Grand Slam record this season at the Australian Open and then extended it in Roland-Garros to lead the way on 22, with Novak Djokovic on 21 after winning Wimbledon last month and Roger Federer now suddenly behind on 20. The Spaniard beat John Isner to the Cincinnati Masters title here in 2013, one of his vast total of 36 Masters titles, but he has played the tournament just three times since. Former world number 12 Borna Coric will be up for this fifth meeting with Nadal in a big way, with a 2-2 draw in their head-to-head record to protect. The 25-year-old is on the long road back to full tour capabilities after a year away with injury and recovery but he played well to beat Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets on Tuesday and he beat Nadal here in straight sets back in 2016.
Nadal may take some winding up after more than a month away and he has been negative about his body in recent days, so backing the Spaniard to win outright is the sensible call.
