THE PREDICTION
World number 29 Borna Coric needed five sets to overcome Enzo Coaucaud on Tuesday but the Croat will be ecstatic to be able to consistently compete after so long. The former world number 12 missed a year from the tour after suffering several injuries and undergoing surgery but he put in a remarkable run to win a first Masters title at the Cincinnati Open two weeks ago, stunning the likes of Rafael Nadal, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Cam Norrie and then Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final. This should be a thoroughly entertaining battle on Thursday with world number 43 Jenson Brooksby enjoying himself in New York once again. The 21-year-old stunned Taylor Fritz and Aslan Karatsev here last year before losing in four sets to Novak Djokovic and he got this campaign underway well with a quick win over an injured Dusan Lajovic.
Brooksby will attract most of the support here as an exciting American youngster but Coric is in some of the form of his career all of a sudden and that will be a huge momentum to have to try and stop. Sets look likely to go both ways, and five sets could be a fruitful punt here, but back Coric to win at least two of them and leave the winner up to chance.
