THE PREDICTION

23-year-old Fabian Marozsan announced himself on the world stage on Monday by causing one of the biggest upsets on the ATP tour in recent years. The Hungarian will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 114th after beating incoming world number one Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets, snapping the Spaniard’s 12-match winning streak from back-to-back titles from Barcelona and Madrid. World number 16 Borna Coric reached the semi-finals in Madrid two weeks ago before defeat to Alcaraz and he only just made it through the second round here in Rome after a tough, tight comeback over Thiago Monteiro. A straight-sets victory over Roberto Carballes Baena on Monday was a solid way to back up his opener but despite the Croat’s clear pedigree at this level it is difficult to look past Marozsan’s shock intervention at the Italian Open. Three sets seem likely here and that makes backing the Hungarian to earn at least one, probably the first one, the sensible way to avoid siding with either player here but do leave this match out of an accumulator as the crowd will likely have their part to play in a wide-open, potential thriller.
