THE PREDICTION

World number 12 Jannik Sinner lost to eventual runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals of the Italian Open last week, backing up a decent clay swing so far. The 20-year-old is an excellent all-courter who set his best Grand Slam showing here in Paris with a quarter-final exit in 2020 and he matched that earlier this season at the Australian Open. Sinner owns five ATP titles, each on hardcourts, including last season’s ATP 500 Washington Open.

World number 185 Bjorn Fratangelo once stunned Sam Querrey in the first round of Roland-Garros back in 2016 but the 28-year-old has won just two of his 13 Grand Slam matches. The former world number 99 spends most of his time on the Challenger circuit and this looks a particularly tough opener against the 11th seed. Sinner has needed top 10 players to oust him so far on clay, so back the Italian to win in straight sets here.
