Former world number four Bianca Andreescu reached the quarter-finals of the Italian Open last week before losing to eventual champion Iga Swiatek, finally making her debut in Rome after missing the last few editions through injury. The 21-year-old won the US Open in 2019 as a 19-year-old sensation, with Indian Wells and Canadian Open titles also coming in that breakthrough season, but she has since struggled with an inordinate amount of injuries. Andreescu has never made it past the second round of Roland-Garros.
World number 168 Ysaline Bonaventure qualified well this week to reach the main draw at Roland-Garros for the first time in her career. The 27-year-old Belgian has won just one of her five Grand Slam matches so far, at the 2020 US Open, and she looks to have drawn one of the shorter straws in the first round here.
