THE LOWDOWN
BIANCA ANDREESCU
Former world number four Bianca Andreescu converted four out of four break points against Nuria Parrizas-Diaz on Wednesday in a solid performance to reach the round of 16 at the Italian Open on her debut in Rome. The Canadian has reached this stage in successive tournaments now for some hopeful signs regarding her fitness after making her latest comeback from injury at the Stuttgart Open last month. 21-year-old Andreescu won the US Open in 2019 as a breakthrough teenager, with two Masters titles also won that season at Indian Wells and the Canadian Open.
PETRA MARTIC
World number 47 Petra Martic put in one of her best performances for some time to beat the fifth seed Anett Kontaveit in straight sets, backing up a solid win over the returning Karolina Muchova. The 31-year-old clearly loves the conditions in Rome, where she lost in the semi-finals last season in three tight sets to eventual runner-up Karolina Pliskova, and she could be coming back into form just in time for a deep run at Roland-Garros. Martic made the quarter-finals in Paris in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
This is a really crucial moment in Bianca Andreescu’s recovery as she attempts to win a third-successive match at a tournament for the first time since the US Open last September. The 21-year-old has impressed so far but a first meeting with Petra Martic will be difficult with the Croat enjoying an affinity with this tournament. Martic is a big-server with a totally different game for the Canadian to combat but a fully fit and firing Andreescu could be backed to win in outright here. The uncertainty around her will take some time to disperse and backing Andreescu to win at least a set seems a suitably cautious move here.
