THE PREDICTION

This should be a proper thriller on Friday between former world number four Bianca Andreescu on a comeback trail and 20-year-old Marta Kostyuk, who looks to be finding her feet on tour in 2023. Current world number 42 Andreescu had won the US Open by Kostyuk’s age in 2019 but several years of injuries and setbacks see her still relatively new to full-tour life as every time she sees some progress she is forced to miss months at a time. As we approach almost a whole year on tour this time around, the Canadian is showing signs of returning to her imperious best and she is yet to drop a set this week as the top seed in Hua Hin. World number 60 Kostyuk is surely a top 10 player of the future herself but she struggled to take hold of a good start to her season last year. Signs are also bright for the Ukrainian in the foreseeable future and she has a game capable of beating Andreescu outright, not just waiting for the Canadian’s level to drop. Back Andreescu to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors and leave the winner up to chance in this first meeting.
