THE PREDICTION
This could be the match of the round on the WTA’s side of the draw between two former world number fours in Caroline Garcia and Bianca Andreescu. World umber 17 Garcia is riding an eight-match winning streak form her recent success at the Cincinnati Masters, where she beat a host of top players including Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula and then Petra Kvitova in the final. The Frenchwoman made Cincinnati her third WTA title of the season after wins at the Poland Open and Bad Homburg Open before that, where she beat Andreescu from a set down in the final. 22-year-old Andreescu is a much better player on a hardcourt, though, and in her element in New York as a former champion here in 2019. The Canadian passed a significant test by beating in-form Beatriz Haddad-Maia in straight sets after a choppy opener against Harmony Tan but this is a huge challenge against a confident Garcia. Three sets seem likely between the two once again, so the sensible option looks to be backing Garcia to win at least one of them to leave the winner up to chance.
