Former world number four Bianca Andreescu could be about to embark on a thrilling run at the Canada Masters if she can maintain the level that saw her beat world number nine Daria Kasatkina on Tuesday. The 22-year-old won here in Toronto back in 2019, her breakthrough season on tour, her second Masters title after claiming Indian Wells that March before going on to win the US Open at 19 years old. Since then the Canadian has struggled with an unfortunate series of injuries, seeing her currently ranked at world number 53, but she will be backed to the hilt by the home crowd this week as Canada’s only major champion. World number 40 Alize Cornet has been a thorn in Andreescu’s side before, however, and the Frenchwoman has been enjoying some blockbuster wins this season. Cornet beat Andreescu in straight sets twice last season at the Berlin Open and Wimbledon on grass and she has stunned the likes of Simona Halep and Iga Swiatek this season after freeing herself from expectations at 32 years old.
A hardcourt, and a home crowd, favour the Canadian here but the suitably cautious move is taking Andreescu to win her first set from Cornet and leaving the winner up to chance between two big-game players. Cornet came back from a set down to stun in-form Caroline Garcia on Monday and she will back herself here, happy to play the villain.
