THE PREDICTION
Former world number four Bianca Andreescu is on the long road back to the top of the sport after taking half a year away for various injuries. The 21-year-old won her comeback match last week in straight sets against Jule Niemaier at the Stuttgart Open, her first since last October’s Indian Wells, before losing to eventual runner-up Aryna Sabalenka in three sets in the round of 16 for some excellent early signs. Before Niemaier, Andreescu’s previous victory came in three sets against Alison Riske in Indian Wells and the American looks set for another battle here. 31-year-old Riske’s last vanquisher was also Aryna Sabalenka, this time in straight sets at the Charleston Open earlier this month. The world number 42 won the third WTA title of her career late last season at the Linz Open and she finished runner-up to Madison Keys earlier this year in Adelaide with recent results suggesting she is well up to the challenge here.
Andreescu’s form is always erratic and she can often implode as much as explode, with most of her matches ending in three sets either way. For that reason, backing Riske to win at least a set looks the shrewd move here even if the American ends up losing.
