World number 17 Belinda Bencic finished runner-up to Liudmila Samsonova here last season at the start of a searing summer of form that saw her win two Gold Medals at the Tokyo Olympic Games. The 25-year-old has so far struggled past Jule Niemeier and Anna Kalinskaya in three sets apiece in Berlin but she should be the better for it ahead of this intriguing rematch with Veronika Kudermetova. World number 24 Kudermetova beat Bencic in straight sets at this stage of last week’s Libema Open to take their tour-level head-to-head record up to 4-3 in favour of Bencic but, interestingly, the Russian has won two of their three meetings on grass. 25-year-old Kudermetova has been in the form of her career this season and she ousted the defending champion Samsonova on Thursday to back-up a huge victory over the third seed Aryna Sabalenka. Her results and recent victory over Bencic last week suggest taking her to win outright here is a reasonable risk but you would be forgiven for taking her to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners.
