THE PREDICTION

World number 14 Belinda Bencic overcame Leylah Fernandez in three tight sets of enthralling tennis on Monday to beat the Canadian for a first time. The 25-year-old is technically riding a two-match streak after withdrawing from the round of 16 at the Ostrava Open two weeks ago, with little sign of injury in Guadalajara suggesting she is a reasonable dark horse for the title here. Former world number three Sloane Stephens handed rising star Linda Fruhvirtova a first-set bagel in a dominant display on Monday but the erratic American has failed to win back-to-back matches in each of her last five tournaments. The 29-year-old beat a teenage Bencic in straight sets at the Miami Open back in 2015 but seven years on the Swiss is by far the more dependable performer. Still, a top-level Stephens would be favourite against almost anybody on tour and her most recent WTA title came in Guadalajara back in February to suggest there is more than just recent form in the background of this likely thriller.

The sensible way to lean is taking Bencic to win at least a set as the likelier victor but this match is well worth keeping away from an accumulator.
