Former world number four Belinda Bencic won two Gold Medals at last season’s Tokyo Olympic Games but without the WTA ranking points behind them she suffered an overall disappointing season on the tour itself. However, the Swiss rediscovered some excellent form this spring, reaching the semi-finals of the Miami Open before winning a fifth WTA title at the Charleston Open on clay. Bencic reached the semi-finals of the US Open back in 2019, losing to eventual champion Bianca Andreescu, but she has never made it past the third round at Roland-Garros.
World number 128 Reka-Luca Jani lost in the final qualifying round on Thursday but the Hungarian was offered a lifeline as a lucky loser to make her main draw debut at Roland-Garros. The 30-year-old made her first and only Grand Slam appearance at the US Open back in 2011 and she could be a handful for Bencic off the back of that achievement but backing the Swiss to win in straight sets remains the clear option.
