Former world number four Belinda Bencic looked a serious Wimbledon contender until turning her ankle in the final of the Berlin Open last weekend saw her retire against Ons Jabeur. It remains to be seen how she recovers but the 25-year-old is one of the more comfortable players on grass on the WTA. She has twice reached the round of 16 at SW19, including in 2015 when she won her first WTA title at the Eastbourne International. This looks a relatively comfortable opener against world number 144 Qiang Wang, with the Chinese taking a five-match losing streak into Wimbledon. The 30-year-old is making her first appearance at Wimbledon since 2019 but she has drawn one of the shorter straws here. Consider Bencic a genuine title contender this fortnight, fitness permitting, and back her to win this opener outright. The injury keeps this from being a straight-sets call.
