THE PREDICTION

This should be one of the matches of the round on Friday between world number 14 Belinda Bencic and number 18 Leylah Fernandez. 25-year-old Bencic is coming off a superb victory over an admittedly out-of-sorts Bianca Andreescu on Wednesday and she has the better clay results in recent times having won her fifth WTA title at last month’s Charleston Open. 19-year-old Fernandez has two solid wins behind her at Roland-Garros over clay-courters Kristina Mladenovic and Katerina Siniakova to match her best run here. The Canadian famously reached the final of the US Open last season with lights-out tennis against some of the sport’s biggest stars before finishing runner-up to Emma Raducanu – who in turn ousted Bencic in the round of 16 at Flushing Meadows.

Fernandez won the first meeting between the two in a Fed Cup match back in 2020 but clay form this season sides fairly strongly with Bencic. The Swiss should be considered a dark horse for the title in Roland-Garros with so many seeds falling by the wayside and with three sets likely here taking Bencic to win at least one as the likelier victor seems rise.
