World number 159 Elisabetta Cocciaretto received a wildcard to the main draw at the Italian Open this week after some successful campaigns on the ITF circuit. The 21-year-old has failed to proceed from this stage in Rome for the last three years, most recently losing in straight sets to Caroline Garcia last season, and she has drawn her toughest opener yet against world number 14 Belinda Bencic. The 25-year-old won the fifth WTA title of her career last month at the Charleston Open with a three-set victory over Ons Jabeur but that was avenged by the Tunisian last week at the Madrid Open in another three-setter at the round of 16 stage. Bencic’s recent form on clay and Cocciaretto’s record so far in Rome suggests the Swiss can be backed to win in pretty comfortable straight sets here.
