World number 14 Belinda Bencic enjoyed a comfortable straight-sets victory over Italian wildcard Elisabetta Cocciaretto on Monday. The 25-year-old won the Charleston Open last month for a first WTA title on clay, beating Ons Jabeur in the final. Jabeur then returned the favour in the round of 16 of last week’s Madrid Open on her way to the title there. Bencic won two Gold Medals at the Tokyo Olympic Games last season in Singles and Women’s Doubles.
AMANDA ANISIMOVA
World number 32 Amanda Anisimova looks set to be seeded at Roland-Garros later this month for the first time at the tournament where she burst onto the world stage by reaching the semi-finals in 2019. The 20-year-old overcame Tereza Martincova in three sets on Tuesday to continue her strong form on clay with a run to the semi-finals of the Charleston Open backed up by a run to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open last week.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a proper battle on Wednesday morning in Rome between Belinda Bencic and Amanda Anisimova with their head-to-head record finely poised at 1-1. Anisimova won their most recent meeting in straight sets at the Australian Open back in January but Bencic’s form has wildly improved after a few months in the wilderness and she looks a decent outsider for the title here if she can maintain her current level on the surface. This match-up deserves at least a quarter-final but the Swiss has the more impressive results in recent times and backing her to win at least a set seems the most sensible course of action.
