World number 24 Tamara Zidansek came to the fore this time last season with an excellent clay swing on her favoured surface, culminating in a run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros. The Slovenian won her first WTA title at the Lausanne Open last season on clay and she should be considered a creditable threat to the latter stages of the Madrid Open despite losing her first match on the surface at the Stuttgart Open last time out. World number 65 Beatriz Haddad-Maia has found some excellent form in recent months but she came through as a lucky loser to face Zidansek after losing to Oceane Dodin in the qualifiers. The Brazilian shocked Maria Sakkari at the Miami Open but her clay results so far suggest she is the underdog here. Back Zidansek to win at least a set as the likelier winner or take the risk on an outright pick.
