World number 20 Simona Halep got off to a slow start against home hopeful Katie Boulter on Friday but the former world number one’s class told eventually in a straight-sets victory. The 30-year-old won the 23rd WTA title of her career at Melbourne 1 at the start of the season and this is the fourth semi-final of her season having also made the last four in Dubai and Indian Wells, losing to the eventual champion on both occasions. The winner or the Birmingham Classic is likely to come from this semi-final with in-form Beatriz Haddad-Maia riding an eight-match winning streak on grass. The 26-year-old had to reconvene her round of 16 clash with Magdalena Frech early on Friday, coming back from a break down in the third set to win a deciding tiebreak, and she took that momentum into a straight-sets victory over the third seed Camila Giorgi.
Halep beat Haddad-Maia in straight sets in the second round of the Australian Open back in January to lead their head-to-head record 2-0, with her first win over the Brazilian coming on grass at Wimbledon in 2017. However, Haddad-Maia is clearly at the top of her game right now on a new-found home on grass and this should be Halep’s biggest challenge yet.
