THE PREDICTION

26-year-old Beatriz Haddad-Maia will break the top 20 on Monday no matter the outcome of her first ever Masters final after a superb straight-sets win over Karolina Pliskova. The Brazilian stunned world number one Iga Swiatek in the round of 16 on Thursday to announce herself a serious contender but wins elsewhere over Leylah Fernandez and former Canada Masters champion Belinda Bencic were just as impressive in their own rights. Haddad-Maia will have to beat another former champion here in 30-year-old Simona Halep, who won two of his six Masters titles at this tournament in 2016 and 2018. The former number one will be relieved to have broken back inside the top 10 on tour for the first time since returning from her long injury lay-off at the start of this season and back-to-back wins over Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula, to whom she dropped her only set this week, have looked assured.

Haddad-Maia burst into form on grass this summer, winning back-to-back titles at the Nottingham Open and Birmingham Classic, the latter of which saw a three-set victory over Halep in the semi-finals. Halep leads this head-to-head record 2-1 after beating the Brazilian in straight sets at Melbourne 1 this January, meaning that both players have won a title this season already at each other’s expense. Halep’s experience should be the difference here but the Romanian has lost more Masters finals (9) than she has won over the years and Haddad-Maia has so far excelled under pressure in 2022. The sensible option is taking Halep to win at least a set, as she has in each of their three meetings, and leaving the winner up to chance in this likely thriller.
