THE PREDICTION

26-year-old Beatriz Haddad-Maia set a career-high WTA world ranking of 16th this week after a searing run to her first Masters final on Sunday, finishing runner-up to Simona Halep at the Canada Masters. The Brazilian burst into form in June with back-to-back titles won at the Nottingham Open and Birmingham Classic on grass and she came close to making three-successive finals after losing to Petra Kvitova in the semi-finals at Eastbourne. World number 15 Jelena Ostapenko was the defending champion in Eastbourne and she went one further than Haddad-Maia, finishing runner-up to Kvitova in the final, before a promising run at Wimbledon was cut short by Tatjana Maria in the round of 16. The Latvian lost in three sets to Alison Riske-Armitraj last week in Toronto but she should be the better for it here in what has been one of her best, most consistent seasons on tour so far.

This is a huge, high-quality encounter for a first round clash and it could come down to the wire. Ostapenko has won both of their previous meetings but Haddad-Maia is a different animal this season. Back the Ostapenko to win at least a set here with Haddad-Maia having to cope from the Toronto final loss in just 48 hours.
