26-year-old Beatriz Haddad-Maia set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 15th this week after reaching a first Masters final at the Canada Masters two weeks ago. The Brazilian finished runner-up to Simona Halep in three sets after ousting an incredible field of talent in Leylah Fernandez, Belinda Bencic, Karolina Pliskova and world number one Iga Swiatek. Haddad-Maia won her first WTA titles back-to-back at the Nottingham Open and Birmingham Classic back in June.
THE PREDICTION
This looks a kind opener for the Brazilian against world number 118 Ana Konjuh, who is plying her first tournament since May after an injury saw her miss out on Roland-Garros, 24-year-old Konjuh has always had a high ceiling but an inordinate amount of injuries over the years have kept her from realising her potential as a former world number 20. The Croat has lost her last eight matches on the spin and in-form Haddad-Maia should be able to make that nine with a win in straight sets.
