THE PREDICTION
This is a huge match-up for a first round clash at the Canadian Open, with former world number one Karolina Pliskova taking on former number two Barbora Krejcikova. The Czech stars are both currently far from their best form after missing much of the early part of the season with respective injuries but 14th-seed Pliskova should feel the more confident of the two with a 3-0 lead in their head-to-head record. The 30-year-old came back from a set down to beat Krejcikova in the group stage of the WTA Finals last November and she has the better of the very recent results after taking Amanda Anisimova to three sets in defeat last week. Three sets seem likelier than two here and, with plenty of room for improvement in both players, taking Pliskova to win at least a set seems the suitably cautious move.
