World number 23 Barbora Krejcikova needs matches, and wins, in her legs ahead of the US Open after struggling with her form and fitness for much of the season. The 26-year-old has still managed to win two Grand Slam title sin the Women’s Doubles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon alongside Katerina Siniakova but her shortcomings are being targeted in the singles and this looks a tricky draw against in-form Bernarda Pera. World number 51 Pera looked like she may never win a WTA title at 27 years old but then two came along at once in a hugely impressive burst of form last month. The American beat the likes of Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Anett Kontaveit to the Hungarian Grand Prix and Hamburg Open on hard and clay, respectively, and she reached the final in a Challenger event two weeks ago before defeat to Coco Vandeweghe. Back Pera to win at least a set in this first meeting with Krejcikova and leave the winner up to chance.
