World number 103 Tatjana Maria and number 136 Astra Sharma are two of the more surprising WTA titlists from the past few seasons, with Maria claiming this season’s Bogota Open and Sharma taking the Charleston 250 last Spring. 34-year-old Maria has the better recent form and a tour-level win on grass against Anastasia Potapova at Bad Homburg last week suggests he has the edge in this first meeting with Sharma but the Aussie qualified well this week for some decent momentum too. This looks like a coupon buster with little evidence to go on but outside of an accumulator back the German to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable winners.
