Former world number one Victoria Azarenka won both of her Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open at her peak in back-to-back seasons in 2012 and 2013. The Belarussian ended both of those seasons with a runner-up place at the US Open to Serena Williams and she more recently lost a third final here to Naomi Osaka in 2020. 33-year-old Azarenka has struggled with her form for much of this season but she is always a threat on the biggest stages, particularly on hardcourts, with 21 WTA titles to her name.

18-year-old Ashlyn Krueger will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 244th after qualifying well this week to make her second appearance at the US Open. The teenager battled well this time last season in a three-set defeat to Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova and she could be a challenge for an out-of-sorts Victoria Azarenka, who has grabbed some strong results in recent times but also faltered poorly in some matches. The shrewd move could be backing American underdog Krueger to grab at least a set here in front of home fans, like she did last season, and leave the winner up to chance. Backing Azarenka to win outright is the sensible call.
