World number eight Aryna Sabalenka lost in three sets to Amanda Anisimova in the first round o the Madrid Open last week but she finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek in Stuttgart the week before for some solid form on clay. World number 42 Shuai Zhang came through her first round match with Martina Trevisan in comfortable fashion for only her second singles win on clay, although the 33-year-old has been enjoying deep runs in the Women’s Doubles events so far this swing. Sabalenka leads this head-to-head record 2-0 at tour-level, most recently beating Shuai Zhang on clay at last season’s Stuttgart Open. All of the Belarussian’s matches are totally dependent on whether her serve is functional right now and that makes taking her to win at least a set the uninspiring, cautious move for an accumulator. Otherwise it might be better off leaving this one alone until we see the 24-year-old in action.
