THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Paula Badosa will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of second after reaching the semi-finals of the Stuttgart Open via an enthralling three-set battle with Ons Jabeur on Friday. The Spaniard is probably the most complete player on clay on the WTA, aside from perhaps Iga Swiatek, and she already looks like a solid title contender at Roland-Garros next month. Badosa was playing alongside world number five Aryna Sabalenka in the Women’s Doubles at the Stuttgart Open before they pulled out of the draw in the quarter-finals but they will face-off against each other now after Sabalenka grabbed her best result of the season with a three-set victory over Anett Kontaveit. The 23-year-old looks to be regaining control of her game after a sorry start to 2022 and back-to-back victories over Kontaveit and Andreescu is hugely encouraging for the former world number two.
Badosa leads Sabalenka 2-0 in their head-to-head record with two wins late last season at the Cincinnati Open and the WTA Finals, both on hardcourts, and she is the better-equipped on this surface to extend that. You could be forgiven for taking the Spaniard to win at least a set here but the new world number two can be backed to win through outright.
