THE LOWDOWN

World number one Aryna Sabalenka handed Maria Sakkari a first-set bagel in a drab match where neither played well in the challenging conditions in Cancun. The 25-year-old win her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January and she finished runner-up to Coco Gauff, from a set up, at the US Open last month to see her reach at least the semi-finals at all four majors this season.

World number five Jessica Pegula beat Elena Rybakina in impressive straight sets on Sunday, winning six games in a row to out-manoeuvre the debutante. 29-year-old Pegula suffered a debut to forget at the WTA Finals last season, losing all six of her matches in singles and double at Fort Worth, but she looks the dark horse for the title this time around as one of the more consistent, measured players in Cancun. Pegula has winning pedigree in Mexico after claiming the Guadalajara Masters this time last season and she added a second Masters title in Montreal back in August.

THE PREDICTION

This is a very tricky match to call given Aryna Sabalenka’s commanding 4-1 lead in their head-to-head record. The Belarussian has won each of their last four meetings on tour, most recently at this stage of the WTA Finals last season, but Pegula looked the better equipped to deal with conditions in Cancun in her opener on Sunday. It seems likely that this could be the match that Pegula loses in Bacalar Group before making the semi-finals with victory over Maria Sakkari but Sabalenka’s efforts on Monday certainly leave the door open for a rare win in this match-up. The suitably cautious move is backing Sabalenka to earn at least a set, as she has done in all of their previous matches, to leave the victor up to chance.

BETTING TIP: Aryna Sabalenka to win a set.
