THE PREDICTION
World number six and Libema Open top seed Aryna Sabalenka battled Shelby Rogers to a first-set tiebreaker and then blasted past the American in the second to take a convincing straight-sets win on Saturday. The 24-year-old has not won a WTA title for over a year, not since last season’s Madrid Open on clay, but she recently finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek at the Stuttgart Open back in April as the first signs of her level returning. She faces a serious test here against world number 30 Ekaterina Alexandrova, though, after the 27-year-old took out an impressive Veronika Kudermetova with just four games conceded. Alexandrova actually won her only WTA title to date at Sabalenka’s expense back at the 2017 Shenzhen Open and after the Belarussian won the next two fixtures she levelled their head-to-head at 2-2 last October at the Kremlin Cup. Sabalenka’s fierce serve and power play should favour her in this first meeting on grass but it would not be a surprise to see this go the other way. Tentatively back Sabalenka to win outright.
