THE LOWDOWN

World number seven Aryna Sabalenka provided the biggest shock of the WTA Finals on Sunday with a three=set victory over form favourite Iga Swiatek. The 24-year-old endured a torrid first-half of the season, mostly spent trying and failing to find her serve, but she started to show signs of returning to form on the North American hardcourt swing and she has now beaten the world’s top three this week in Swiatek, Ons Jabeur and Jessica Pegula. Sabalenka’s most recent of 10 WTA titles came in early 2021 but she looks like adding plenty more to that number next season.

World number six Caroline Garcia blasted past in-form Maria Sakkari on Sunday in what had looked set to be a tight thriller. The 29-year-old has reached the WTA Grand Final for the first time after making her tournament debut five years ago in a surprising return to the top of the game from several years in the wilderness. Garcia claimed the third Masters title of her career at the Cincinnati Open back in August to take her career total up to 10 titles.

THE PREDICTION

Aryna Sabalenka and Caroline Garcia lost their respective US Open semi-finals back in September, Garcia to Ons Jabeur and Sabalenka to the eventual champion Iga Swiatek. However, the Belarussian is the more surprising finalist here at Fort Worth after only just sneaking into the draw but her revenge mission against Swiatek on Sunday makes her look the favourite here on determination alone. The pair have met each other four times on tour, with Garcia taking their most recent encounter in the semi-finals in Cincinnati on her way to the title. Three of tehri four matches have gone to three sets, so that could be the valuable option here, but Garcia has earned at least one set in each of them and backing her to take at least one looks the most sensible option here even if Sabalenka does end up the winner.
