29-year-old Shelby Rogers set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 30th earlier this month after reaching the Silicon Valley Classic final, where she lost from a set up to Daria Kasatkina. The American is one of the more unpredictable players on tour with a very high ceiling but intermittent form, perfectly showcased in her victory over world number one Ash Barty here last season before a comprehensive defeat by the eventual champion Emma Raducanu in the round of 16. Rogers is the last player to beat now retired Barty and she has every chance of at least emulating her best Grand Slam exit in the quarter-finals here in 2020.
THE PREDICTION
World number 96 Arantxa Rus has spent much of the season on the ITF and Challenger circuit, with some recent success, but the Dutchwoman’s last tour-level win came back in May at the Rabat Open. The 31-year-old has lost in the first round of her last eight majors and she looks set for a ninth against in-form Shelby Rogers. Back the American to win in two.
