World number 37 Kaia Kanepi came back from a set down to oust Lin Zhu on Wednesday, backing up a solid straight-sets win over Greet Minnen. The 37-year-old has enjoyed some excellent runs this season not least reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open back in January before a three-set defeat to Iga Swiatek. 23-year-old Anna Kalinskaya will be her toughest foe yet in Washington, though, as the Russian stunned an out-of-sorts Simona Halep on Wednesday, with the second seed retiring in the second set of their round of 16 clash. The Russian will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 67th no matter the outcome here and she will be buzzing from a victory over a player of Halep’s stature. Kanepi should be too experienced to be upset here but backing the Estonian to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors seems the sensible way to lean.
