Former world number 12 Elise Mertens is enduring an odd season so far in 2022. The 26-year-old is currently ranked at world number 37 after losing in the first round in four of her last five tournaments but she beat Angelique Kerber to reach the round of 16 at Wimbledon last month and she finished runner-up in the Women’s Doubles there to Katerina Siniakova and Barbora Krejcikova. The Belgian is at her best on the bigger stages, it seems, but world number 54 Anna Bondar may fancy her chances at the upset here after recent runs to the semi-finals of the Hungarian Grand Prix and quarter-finals of the Palermo Open on her favoured clay. Mertens should have more than enough on her best surface here in Toronto but there is plenty of doubt about this match that makes backing the Belgian to win at least a set the suitably cautious pick for an accumulator.
