World number 37 Anhelina Kalinina continued her excellent 2022 form with a straight-sets victory over Sloane Stephens on Friday. The 25-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Charleston Open in early April via some brilliant results over the likes of Elena Rybakina and Alize Cornet before losing to in-form Ons Jabeur. Kalinina reached a first tour final last season at the Budapest Open on clay.
GARBINE MUGURUZA
World number nine Garbine Muguruza beat Ajla Tomljanovic in assured straight sets on Friday to snap a two-match losing run that stretched back to the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open. The 28-year-old former world number one has taken a short break after some poor form this season so far but she ended last year as the WTA Finals champion for a second time to suggest her best level is not far away.

Garbine Muguruza would be a very popular Madrid Open champion if she can find her best level this week but there are plenty of top players who enjoy the clay more than hers till left to face and a first meeting with Anhelina Kalinina will be a tough one. 25-year-old Kalinina has been steadily improving this season and a straight-sets victory over Sloane Stephens is an impressive result to bring to the occasion. Muguruza has been a hard player to confidently back all season long but she remains, at her best, one of the very best on tour today. Taking the Spaniard to win at least a set is the sensible move here but backing Kalinina to take one instead could be the shrewd move.
