THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Angelique Kerber took no prisoners on Monday, handing Kristina Mladenovic a first-set bagel before coming through a better-contested second set. The 34-year-old recently won the 14th WTA title of her illustrious career at the Strasbourg Open on clay, beating next opponent Magda Linette in the quarter-finals, and she is vastly superior on grass as her Grand Slam title here in 2018 attests. Kerber reached the semi-finals here last season before defeat to eventual champion Ash Barty and she has reached the quarter-finals on five previous occasions – more than any other major. The three-time Grand Slam champion should be considered a serious contender for the title next Saturday but world number 65 Linette has recent form for stunning favourites after she beat Ons Jabeur in the first round of Roland-Garros. The 30-year-old beat an excellent grass-courter in Alison Riske at Eastbourne last week and she should not be underestimated.
Their Strasbourg meeting went to three sets, making an outright pick for Kerber the sensible move here, but the German should be able to come through in two on her best surface.
