Former world number one and three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber returns to a home from home at Wimbledon, where she won the third of her majors in 2018. The 34-year-old spent a few years in the wilderness before an out-of-the-blue run to the Bad Homburg Open title last summer but she failed to match it this year with a defeat to Alize Cornet in the quarter-finals on Thursday. Kerber reached the semi-finals here last season before defeat to eventual champion Ash Barty and she has made at least the quarter-finals here on five occasions – more than any other major.
Former world number 10 Kristina Mladenovic spends most of her energy on the doubles side of the tour these days and she recently won Roland-Garros alongside fellow Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia. The 29-year-old has reached the quarter-finals of both Roland-Garros and the US Open in the singles but she is an excellent all-courter and capable of the upset here, having ousted Kerber at this stage of the US Open back in 2019. Kerber leads their head-to-head record 4-2, though, and the German is likely to win their first meeting on grass. Consider Kerber a genuine dark horse for the Wimbledon title this fortnight and back her to win outright here.
