THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Anett Kontaveit set a career-high WTA world ranking of fifth recently and she can go as high as fourth this week if she wins the Stuttgart Open after Maria Sakkari lost on Thursday. The Estonian has twice come back from a set down to beat two serious opponents in Angelique Kerber and Ekaterina Alexandrova and she looks to be on her way back to her imperious form that saw her win four tournaments in the second-half of last season to qualify for the WTA Finals. World number four Aryna Sabalenka was runner-up in Stuttgart last year and she played well to beat the retuning Bianca Andreescu in three sets on Thursday but the Belarussian is still searching for the best of her tools after a dreadful start to the season. 23-year-old Sabalenka could have blasted past a few players in Stuttgart nonetheless but Kontaveit should be too consistent to slip up here, even though she has yet to beat the powerful former world number two.
The pair shared three sets at this stage of last season’s Stuttgart Open and their respective levels have inversed since then, so backing Kontaveit to win at least a set is the sensible move here and to win outright the reasonable risk.
