THE PREDICTION

World number two Anett Kontaveit was in full control of her quarter-final clash with Andrea Petkovic on Thursday before the German was forced to retire from their second set. After a few months struggling with covid-19 and its after-effects, 26-year-old Kontaveit looks to be coming back into the kind of form that saw her win a stunning four tournaments in the space of just three months late last season. The Estonian is yet to drop a set this week but in-form Anastasia Potapova should provide her first stern test in Hamburg. 21-year-old Potapova is also yet to drop a set this week on what is proving to be her best surface and she will set a new career-high of at least 57th after stunning Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets. Kontaveit beat a teenage Potapova at the Kremlin Cup back in 2018 but even that match went to three sets. Backing the top seed to win outright is the suitably cautious call here but perhaps the shrewd move is taking Potapova to win at least a set.
