World number 48 Andy Murray takes on number 47 Sebastian Korda on Friday in what promises to be a proper thriller if both players can find their best tennis. 35-year-old Murray enjoyed an excellent start to the Gijon Open in taking out Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in straight sets and he coped well with an early scare against Pedro Cachin on Thursday, coming back from a set down to scrape through on a deciding tiebreak. Meanwhile, 22-year-old Korda also came back from a set down to oust third-seed Roberto Bautista Agut on Thursday which would be impressive anyway but extra here as the villain of the piece against a Spaniard who almost always performs for his nation. A first meeting between Murray and Korda holds more questions than answers but Murray’s defensive capabilities should limit the American’s occasionally potent serve. Korda can win this at the net with his imperious wingspan but back Murray to earn at least a set here as the likelier of two very capable winners.
