Former world number one Andy Murray looked in great shape on Wednesday, coming back from a set down to beat an impressive Emilio Nava in four. The 35-year-old is through to the third round of the US Open for the first time since 2016, the year he won the last of his three Grand Slam titles and ended the year-end number one with an ATP Finals trophy. The Brit is back on tour consistently for the first time since early 2017 and back with his ex-coach Iban Lendl, with whom he won both Wimbledon titles, for a marked improvement on his level in recent months and, now, his form. This is a huge test against world number 14 Matteo Berrettini, though, as the Italian has needed one of Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal to knock him out of his last four Grand Slams. The 26-year-old dropped a set against lucky loser Hugo Grenier on Wednesday and needed two tight tiebreaks to squeak out in four as he still searches for his best form from earlier this summer when he won back-to-back titles at Stuttgart and Queen’s.
Berrettini beat Murray in a tight three-set final on grass at Stuttgart, both players’ best surfaces, and he has won their last two meetings to lead 2-1 in their head-to-head record. Murray won their first encounter in two tiebreaks at the 2019 Beijing Open, their only meeting on a hardcourt, to suggest taking at least a tiebreak in this match is a suitable way to avoid picking a winner.
