Andy Murray will move back into the top 50 ahead of Queen’s on Monday after reaching the final of the Stuttgart Open, his second ATP tour final of the season. The former world number one ousted his friend off the court Nick Kyrgios in a fiery straight-sets encounter to back-up a stunning victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas, the top seed, in the quarter-finals. That was Murray’s first top five win since beating Novak Djokovic at the ATP Finals in 2016 and a huge statement for the rest of the season moving forward but world number 10 Matteo Berrettini is also one of the best on grass on tour right now. The 26-year-old will be elated after returning form injury this week to reach the final, his first since Queen’s this time last year where he beat a returning Murray in the round of 16 on his way to the title. Murray won their first encounter at the 2019 Beijing Open and this third encounter will be fascinating.
Berrettini’s route to the final has been far kinder than Murray’s and the Italian will find a much better version of the Brit this time around. Back Murray to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners or take the outright risk. Murray is yet to drop a set this week.
