Former world number one Andy Murray has ultimately suffered a frustrating season on tour but the fact that he has returned week-in-week-out from potentially career-ending hip replacement surgery is a huge achievement in itself. The 35-year-old has reached two finals on tour this season, losing to Aslan Karatsev at the Sydney Tennis Classic and Matteo Berrettini at the Stuttgart Open, and he will be aiming for a big week in Paris in this last tournament of the year. 37-year-old Gilles Simon is another former top 10 player whose career is certainly at least in its twilight but the veteran enjoyed a brief moment in the sun at Roland-Garros this summer, stunning Pablo Carreno Busta in the first round to prove his wily shot-making remains. Murray leads Simon 16-2 in their storied head-to-head record but the pair have not played since the Brit’s most consistent season on tour as world number one in 2016. Back the Brit to win outright cautiously here with straight sets likely but not worth the risk – particularly with Simon playing at home in Paris in what could well be his swansong.
