35-year-old Andy Murray won a Grand Slam match in straight sets for the first time since he was world number one, over five years ago, with an assured performance over 24th-seed Francisco Cerundolo. The Brit won his first Grand Slam title here in New York 10 years ago and he looks capable of making his deepest run in years back under the tutelage of coach Ivan Lendl, with whom he won both of his Wimbledon titles in 2013 and 2016. That is not to discount world number 203 Emilio Nava, though, who justified his wildcard with a five-set epic over John Millman on Monday. The 20-year-old will be well-backed as the American underdog here but he will find a different atmosphere against a former champion and popular player in Murray, who himself will be bolstered after struggling on tour in recent weeks. Back Murray to win outright here with four sets about as likely as three in what could be the biggest match of Nava’s career for some time.
