Former world number one Andy Murray looked assured in a straight-sets victory over a returning Dominic Thiem on Monday. The 34-year-old is back with coach Ivan Lendl, with whom he reached the top spot in 2016 in his best season on tour, and his serve looks to have already benefitted hugely from the partnership. Murray owns 14 ATP Masters 1000 titles that include two from the Madrid Open from 2008, beating Gilles Simon, and most recently 2015 where he beat Rafael Nadal.
DENIS SHAPOVALOV
World number 16 Denis Shapovalov beat a tough lucky loser in Ugo Humbert to reach the second round of the Madrid Open unscathed. The 23-year-old has won just one ATP title so far from the 2020 Stockholm Open but he reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon last season in a flash of what he is capable of and the quarter-finals of the Australian Open this year before losing to eventual champion Rafael Nadal in five sets.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a fascinating rematch between Denis Shapovalov and Andy Murray after the young Canadian spoiled Murray’s party at Wimbledon last season. Shapovalov put in one of the best performances of his career to beat Murray in straight sets in the third round last summer and he took that level all the way to the semi-finals before losing to Novak Djokovic. Since then the Canadian has largely faltered, although he is always capable of that kind of performance on the biggest occasions as that five-set thriller with Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open can attest to. Beating Thiem was an impressive result for Murray, who looked good on Monday, but the 34-year-old has failed to win back-to-back matches on tour since reaching the final of the Sydney Tennis Classic and backing Shapovalov to win at least a set here as the likelier winner looks the sensible move.
