World number 68 Andy Murray had planned to miss out the entire clay season in preparation for grass but he entered the Madrid Open last-minute and enjoyed a run to the round of 16 via two impressive wins over Dominic Thiem and Denis Shapovalov. An illness saw him miss-out on another meeting with old foe Novak Djokovic there but the Brit was fit and firing in Surbiton last week, where he reached the semi-finals before defeat in three to Denis Kudla. Former world number one Murray is making his debut at the Stuttgart Open but he is a seasoned competitor on grass with eight of his 46 ATP titles coming on the surface: two Grand Slam titles and the 2012 London Olympic Games Gold Medal from Wimbledon and a record five titles at Queen’s.
World number 116 Christopher O’Connell started 2022 off in excellent personal form with two upsets over Hugo Gaston and the 13th seed Diego Schwartzman on home soil. The 28-year-old made the quarter-finals in Surbiton last week, including a strong result over Soonwoo Kwon, but he faces a much tougher task here after qualifying well in Stuttgart. Murray beat O’Connell in three tight sets at the Dubai Tennis Championships back in February but this should come more comfortably for the Scot. Backing Murray to win outright is the sensible move but realistically he should be ready to take this in two.
