THE LOWDOWN

35-year-old Andy Murray is one of four former world number ones turning out for Team Europe this weekend in London and he will likely feature in the second doubles match on Saturday. The current world number 43 was part of an unsuccessful Team GB at last week’s Davis Cup in Glasgow but his singles form has visibly improved since joining up with his former coach Ivan Lendl, with whom he won both Wimbledon titles. This the Brit’s first ever Laver Cup appearance, with much of his last five years on tour blighted by injuries and surgeries.

World number 22 Alex de Minaur represented Australia well at last week’s Davis Cup Group Stage, winning both of his singles matches. The 23-year-old has been in excellent form this summer, winning the sixth ATP title of his career at the Atlanta Open as well as reaching the round of 16 at Wimbledon. De Minaur excels in international conditions, with his career-best victory so far coming against Matteo Berrettini at the ATP Cup this January.

THE PREDICTION

Alex de Minaur beat Andy Murray in their only previous meeting en-route to his third ATP title from the Zhuhai Championships in 2019. However, the Brit is back to as full a strength as he likely can be after successful surgery and rehabilitation and this second encounter should be much more of a contest, especially in London. Expect plenty of lost causes being chased between two of the fastest players on tour with lightning reflexes in what promises to be a thriller on Friday evening. Given their record this looks a really tough call but Murray has enjoyed plenty of success at the O2 before now, winning his last great title here at the 2016 ATP Finals, and backing him to edge this encounter seems reasonable.
