World number eight Andrey Rublev started poorly against Dan Evans on Thursday but after a tight first-set tiebreak the Russian improved to win in straight sets. 24-year-old Rublev has won three ATP titles this season already, taking his career total up to 11, and he is currently riding a six-match winning streak after claiming the Serbia Open final with a three-set victory over Novak Djokovic. Rublev twice finished runner-up Masters events last year, to Stefanos Tsitsipas in Monte-Carlo and Alexander Zverev in Cincinnati.
STEFANOS TSITSIPAS
World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas was in control throughout his round of 16 clash with Grigor Dimitrov to reach the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open without dropping a set. The 23-year-old successfully defended his Monte-Carlo Open title last month with an assured campaign, including wins over Alexander Zverev and Diego Schwartzman. Tsitsipas reached a first Grand Slam final last season at Roland-Garros and took the first two sets against Novak Djokovic before a capitulation that marred the rest of his season.
THE PREDICTION
There is already a storied, exciting rivalry between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev and this looks set to be another thrilling battle between the two. Rublev was the most recent victor in a straight-sets result in the group stages of the ATP Finals last November although, admittedly, Tsitsipas was hampered by an elbow injury that later saw him pull out of the tournament and undergo surgery. The pair have won a final against the other, Rublev in Hamburg back in 2020 and Tsitsipas in Monte-Carlo last year, for two of their three meetings on clay that the Greek leads 2-1 but neither is at the very peak of their powers at present. Rublev has struggled through his two matches in Madrid so far whilst Tsitsipas has the confidence of a recent Masters title behind him and overall he is the better player on clay. Back the Greek to win outright here with three sets a distinct possibility
